Case Study
Pokémon Explorer
Fast, searchable Pokédex with evolutions, shiny toggles, and a random team generator — built in React with a light PokeAPI wrapper.
The Problem
Let users find any Pokémon instantly and explore evolutions/shiny forms without slow page hops — keep the UI snappy and the codebase modular.
Solution
- Instant search with a controlled input in <SearchBar/>; debounced queries keep typing fluid.
- Composable UI: <Main/> orchestrates sections, <DataPage/> handles details, <PokemonCard/> renders stats/sprite/shiny toggle.
- Evolution traversal (prev/next + chain hops) on the details view to reduce page churn.
- Shiny mode: per-card toggle plus an optional mass toggle pathway (kept simple in component state).
- Random team generator returns 6 picks; easy refresh for new teams.
- QoL & performance: <Preloader/> skeletons, <BackToTop/> helper, memoized list rendering, and a thin PokeAPI wrapper (utils/PokeApi.js).
- Tests: smoke test for app mount and basic rendering in App.test.js with RTL.
Results
- Perceived search latency ~sub-100 ms after debounce on typical connections.
- Clearly separated concerns — components are small, CSS is scoped, and data fetching is centralized.
Next
- Client-side cache (IndexedDB/localStorage) to make repeat searches instant offline
- Sprite prefetch for evolution chains
- Keyboard nav for result grid + ARIA live region for search feedback
